Blog Shout-out

The hutch is coming along. It's almost all distressed. I'm just waiting on Mr. Five to Nine to put it all together. In the meantime, I wanted to highlight another local artist. Baby Bizzles is run by my new sewing partner and good friend. She's a sewing genius! Look at all these creative ideas she's come up with for baby accessories. Her flower clips and headbands are killing me; I'm tempted to try for another baby stat in the hopes that I have a girl who can wear these:

Prices range from $5-$8.

And then there are these tiny flowers in the form of binky clips that range from $8-$12:

And my favorite of all is this matching outfit:

For those of you who have boys, don't worry; she's got lots of things for boys, too. Like this adorable tie for only $8:

And this binky clip:

But perhaps may favorite is the infamous sprinkle stopper (I call them pee pee tee pees) that sells for only $7 for a package of three:

Head on over to Baby Bizzles; she posts new handcrafted items all the time, and she has such fun, creative ideas at very affordable prices. If you don't have children of your own, these would be a perfect gift for a new baby; you'd be hard-pressed to find cuter more affordable baby shower gifts than these! For all you out-of-state readers, she offers shipping. And for all you locals, Ms. Baby Bizzles lives just a couple blocks from me, so if you see something you want from both of us, you could easily stop in to both places.

Hutch Update

Sorry for the annoying real-time updates, but I'm pretty excited with how the hutch is turning out. Here's the bottom distressed:

I decided to keep the hardware. I just finished painting and distressing that, and it looks really great, so the base is all done except for re-attaching the hardware. The top is coming along, but a little slower than I had planned. You can see it peeking out behind the base; I haven't even started painting the wainscoting yet, but I'm hoping another couple hours will do the trick. It's amazing how much I can accomplish without a three year-old "helping" me.

Hutch Update

I've had several of you ask about the hutch I'm working on. Just as I suspected, my kids were not in the mood to cooperate, so I haven't gotten it done yet; we finished up RSV and breathing treatments, and then the next day one of them got the stomach flu. Needless to say, it's been one of those weeks. But!! My plan is to work on it all day today. I'm pretty sure I can finish it by tomorrow. While it may look like it's not a whole lot different from the before picture, this top piece is actually coming right along. I have it all torn down and washed out ready to prime and then paint.

The bottom piece looks more promising, despite the poor lighting. It's painted and dry, so I can get going on distressing and putting the knobs back on.

I'm going to get my baby to sleep and then crank out as much as I can as fast as I can do it. Check back tomorrow afternoon around 3 or 4. It's going to be good. (I think.)

Before: French Provincial Hutch

I have had request upon request for another black hutch. I have a love/hate relationship with hutches. I love how they turn out; because they are such large pieces, their transformations are really quite striking and dramatic. On the flip side, though, they take a long time to do from start to finish; on average, a hutch takes me eight-twelve hours to complete from start to finish. I always feel like I have to gear up and get mentally prepared before I do a hutch. I've been trying to talk myself into working on this one for the past month:

I think I'm ready. The plan is to do all the prep work Monday, paint on Tuesday, distress and finish Wednesday. However, my sons seem to disagree with my plans often, so we'll see if things go according to plan. At the very latest, I'm hoping to have it done by next Friday or Saturday. The plan is a semi-gloss black with light distressing. I really like the hardware, and think it adds a lot to it, so I'm thinking I'm going to keep it and just paint it. The only thing I'm not sure about is the back portion of the top piece. I'm thinking I might take out the mirrored portion and put in wainscoting instead. Any requests?
